Vintage Case Parts specializes in the reproduction of obsolete case components for classic Steinway & Sons grand pianos. Our parts are revolutionizing the manner in which rebuilders and refinishers across the country are restoring these vintage instruments.

Often Steinway pianos enter the rebuilding shop with severely damaged case parts, inappropriate retrofitted parts, or missing parts altogether. Repair of defective parts was costly, if not prohibitive, from the standpoint of time, labor and materials. For instance, a rebuilder could spend several days bent over a decrepit toplid, shimming numerous core splits, regluing flaking veneer, and tending to several applications of body putty, only to see his beautiful repairs begin to migrate and telegraph through a gorgeous new finish soon after application. Further, the in-shop fabrication of a set of legs, for example, was beyond the scope of the majority of rebuilding shops, regardless of experience and talent.

Vintage Case Parts, founded in 2001 by David G. Hughes, RPT, a Steinway piano rebuilder himself, has stepped in to fill this dilemma in the rebuilding trade. David’s goal was to produce and offer historically accurate case components for vintage Steinway grands to fill this industry void.

Exhaustive analysis of original Steinway & Sons case parts from several early time periods with respect to construction, dimension, and aesthetic was performed. VCP designs and resultant offerings are CAD-produced and executed with CNC machinery. The level of detail in the entire product line is stunning. Where deemed appropriate, structural and joinery improvements over the original manufacturer’s plans have been incorporated to enhance durability and longevity of beauty.

VCP products utilize lightweight, non-warping core materials and are crossbanded with veneers appropriate to the era and model of the rebuilder’s candidate piano. The finest woods available are used, and our parts are 100% American made in a variety of solids and veneers. All parts are unfinished, fine-sanded, and ready for the rebuilder’s production process.

Those in the trade find VCP’s pricing and availability unbeatable: not only are these vintage-style components far less costly than the original manufacturer’s currently produced counterparts (which are not aesthetically appropriate for old Steinways), these parts are virtually unavailable from any other source. Truly, prior to the advent of Vintage Case Parts, these parts were irreplaceable.

VCP charges a modest boxing fee for all items (which is reduced for multiple items within the same order), and the cost of shipping is the buyer’s responsibility. Any part may be picked up at our shop in Reisterstown, Maryland (metropolitan Baltimore) to avoid shipping charges.

Toplids are made to order, requiring 4-5 weeks to fabricate and are shipped via motor freight in an extremely road-worthy crate; all other parts are stocked for immediate shipment and shipped via UPS.
